IPTV Apps Explained: Native Apps vs IPTV Players

IPTV apps explained: a provider's own app vs a general IPTV player, what M3U playlists and Xtream Codes logins are, and which to use on each device.

There are two kinds of IPTV app: a provider's own (native) app, which is preconfigured for that service, and general IPTV players, which work with many services once you enter a login or playlist link. Which one you use depends mostly on your device.

Native provider apps

A native app is built for one service. You install it, enter your login and everything (channels, VOD, TV guide) is set up for you.

The XCodes IPTV app is a native app for Android-based devices:

  • Amazon Fire TV and Firestick (Fire OS)
  • Android TV and Google TV
  • Android phones and tablets

You install it with Downloader code 5496614 on TV devices, or from aftv.news/5496614 in a phone browser. See the Firestick installation guide.

General IPTV players

IPTV players are apps that don't come with any content. You add your own subscription to them. They're how you watch on devices that can't install Android apps:

  • iPhone, iPad and Apple TV (App Store)
  • Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) smart TVs
  • Windows PCs and Macs

Players vary in design, features and price. Some support a full TV guide, catch-up and favorites; others are basic. Availability also varies by device and region, so ask XCodes IPTV support for a current recommendation for your device.

Login types: Xtream Codes vs M3U

IPTV players usually accept one or both of these:

  • Xtream Codes login (also called Xtream API): a username, password and server URL. This is usually the best option because the player can load live channels, VOD and the TV guide separately and quickly.
  • M3U playlist link: a single web address that lists the channels. It's simpler to paste in, but large playlists can load slowly, and the TV guide may need a separate EPG link.

When you order XCodes IPTV, tell us which player you use and we'll send the right login format.
