An IPTV M3U is a playlist file, or a link to one, that lists TV channels and their stream addresses in a simple text format that IPTV players understand. Load an M3U link into a compatible player and it builds your channel list automatically, complete with names, logos and categories. It's one of the two most common ways IPTV services deliver access to players, alongside Xtream Codes-style logins.
What an M3U file looks like
An M3U is plain text. Here's a simplified example with placeholder addresses:
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="news.example" tvg-logo="https://example.com/logo-news.png" group-title="News",Example News HD
http://example-server.com/live/user/pass/1001.ts
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="sport.example" tvg-logo="https://example.com/logo-sport.png" group-title="Sports",Example Sport FHD
http://example-server.com/live/user/pass/1002.ts
The parts, line by line
| Element | Meaning |
|---|---|
#EXTM3U |
Marks the file as an extended M3U playlist |
#EXTINF:-1 |
Starts a channel entry; -1 means live/unknown length |
tvg-id |
Channel ID used to match guide (EPG) data |
tvg-logo |
URL of the channel logo |
group-title |
The category the channel appears under |
| Text after the comma | Channel name shown in the player |
| Next line | The stream URL itself |
M3U vs M3U8
- M3U is the original playlist format.
- M3U8 is the same idea saved in UTF-8 encoding, which handles accented and non-Latin characters correctly.
In streaming, M3U8 is also used by HLS to list the short video segments of a single stream. So "M3U8" can mean either a channel playlist or a segment playlist depending on context. See IPTV internet protocol for the HLS side.
M3U link vs M3U file
- An M3U link is a URL that generates the playlist on request. It updates automatically when the provider changes channels.
- An M3U file is a saved copy. It won't update by itself, so channels may stop working over time.
Use the link wherever possible.
How to add an IPTV M3U link to a player
The steps are similar in most players:
- Open the player and choose Add playlist (or "Add user", "Load your playlist or file/URL").
- Select M3U URL rather than Xtream Codes.
- Give the playlist a name.
- Paste the full M3U link exactly as provided.
- Optionally add the EPG (XMLTV) URL for the TV guide.
- Save and wait for channels to load; large lists can take a minute.
On devices without an easy keyboard, some players let you add the playlist from a web page using a code or the device's MAC address. Our guide to Smart IPTV shows an example.
M3U vs Xtream Codes login
| M3U link | Xtream Codes login | |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | One long URL | Server URL, username, password |
| Live TV | Yes | Yes |
| Movies and series | Sometimes, as a long list | Organized libraries |
| TV guide | Separate EPG URL often needed | Usually automatic |
| Loading speed with big lists | Slower | Faster |
| Player support | Very wide | Most modern players |
When you subscribe to XCodes IPTV, tell support which player you use and they'll send the format that works best with it. On Android-based devices, XCodes IPTV's own app handles sign-in for you.
Keeping your M3U link secure
Your M3U link usually contains your account credentials. Treat it like a password:
- Don't post it in forums, group chats or screenshots.
- Don't paste it into unknown websites or "playlist checker" tools.
- If you think it's been shared, ask your provider to reset your details.
Troubleshooting M3U problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Invalid playlist" | Link copied incompletely | Copy the whole URL again; check for spaces |
| Channels load, none play | Wrong output format or expired account | Ask for a different format (TS vs HLS); check account status |
| No logos | Logo URLs missing or blocked | Cosmetic only; ignore or re-add the list |
| No guide | EPG not added or IDs don't match | Add the XMLTV URL; refresh the guide |
| Very slow loading | Huge list on a slow device | Use an Xtream Codes login or a faster device |
Editing an M3U playlist
You can hide categories, reorder channels or rename groups with a playlist editor. Our article on the IPTV Editor covers editing tools, and IPTV playlists explains how to manage several lists.
A note on public M3U lists
Websites sometimes share "free M3U lists". Some list publicly available free channels; others contain streams their publishers have no right to share. Stick to playlists from your provider or from clearly legitimate sources.
Summary
An IPTV M3U is a simple text playlist of channels and stream URLs. Use the link rather than a saved file, add the EPG link for a guide, keep it private, and switch to an Xtream Codes login if your player struggles with large lists.
